Cheorwon’s endless, purgatorial circuit is an allusion to Ed Adkin’s Good Wine, a vicious cycle of sadness.
Wohlwend’s installation Cheorwon constitutes a subsequential dialogue with Ed Atkins’ Good Wine, and thus examines the absurdity of political and social behavior in relation to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea). The multimedia installation, here situated in the archive of Suwon’s Sinpung Elementary School, South Korea, features two of the notorious tunnels of the DMZ. The audio is unaltered from the original track with the only exception, that every now and then a single tone from a keystroke references the piano of Good Wine. Having visited Ed Atkins’ exhibition Old Food just prior to his visits to the DMZ, Wohlwend was overcome with corresponding emotions. Cheorwon offers an investigation into this circumstance.
